Legal costs in civil litigation are the expenses that a party incurs when they pursue legal proceedings, either as plaintiff or defendant. These can include attorney fees and other professional services such as expert witnesses. In many jurisdictions, these costs cannot be recovered by filing an appeal of the case following its dismissal for want of prosecution or setting aside judgment due to lack of jurisdiction.
